COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which can cause mild to severe respiratory illness. This virus is spread from person-to-person, between people who are in close contact with one another, and from any infected surface-to-person.

Older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes are at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.
